Prostate cancer screening and early detection in our practice in Berlin

Prostate cancer screening and early detection Berlin and other screening examinations in our practice in Wilmersdorf.

Prostate cancer screening and early detection in Berlin or Germany are recommended by health insurance companies from the age of 40. If a prostate tumor is detected early, the right therapy can be selected and initiated depending on the findings. Because a malignant prostate tumor has different characteristics in each affected person, we as urologists in Berlin decide with the patient, depending on the results, how best to treat the patient. Surgery or radiation is not always necessary or advisable. Especially in older patients, a prostate tumor often grows slowly, so that within the life span, according to recent studies, it usually does not shorten life. Then it is only “monitored” by the urologist, called “active surveillance”. In some cases, surgery is still performed later, but first, there is close medical monitoring in our private practice for urology, sexual medicine, and internal medicine in Berlin to observe the prostate tumor.

Early detection of prostate cancer: Screening with us in Berlin

It is often different in younger patients, when in addition the tumor may have an aggressive component. Here it can be important that prostate carcinoma is immediately treated with active therapy. In general, there are various medical options available in Berlin, depending on the severity and stage: Surgery (radical prostatectomy with complete removal of the prostate), radiation as well as brachytherapy, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy. The treatment of prostate cancer is guideline-based (S-3 guideline). The form of therapy must be carefully considered, taking into account all findings and life circumstances, as side effects are also possible.

Prostate cancer screening Berlin: Possibility of PSA test and PCA-3 test in certain cases

During the prostate cancer screening and early detection examination in our private practice for urology, sexual medicine, and internal medicine in Berlin Wilmersdorf, the first step is a consultation with the doctor, followed by palpation or examination with color Doppler sonography in 3D. If prostate cancer is suspected, a PSA test (PSA: prostate-specific antigen = tumor marker) can be performed, in certain cases also a gene-based PCA-3 test. Once all the findings on the prostate are available, we as urologists in Berlin can make a therapy recommendation in the case of prostate cancer.

Cancer screening for the urinary bladder and kidneys is performed equally for women and men.

From the age of 40, we recommend cancer screening for the urinary bladder and ureters for both women and men. This is done first with a urine test, in which the urine is examined microscopically for cellular components, and with a “bladder tumor test” (NMP-22 or UBC Rapid). This is followed, if necessary, by photodynamic diagnostic PDD. During bladder scope using the latest equipment technology, possible tumors are stained and visualized with the help of a fluorescent dye. Urine and ultrasound examinations are used for the early detection of kidney cancer in women and men, e.g. for risk groups with chronic renal insufficiency.

Testicular cancer screening is recommended for young men aged 20 and older

For men aged 20 and older, we recommend screening for testicular cancer. Here, sonography (ultrasound) and determination of tumor markers (AFP, HCG, LDH, PLAP) are available. In addition, as part of the examination, we also provide education and instructions for self-examination of the testicles by palpation.
